In post #3966 I already stated that it works, i.e. you can flash sMIUI with TWRP. However, you need the "correct" TWRP for unified partitions for the Mi2s... EDIT: For all of you interested in a working TWRP for MI2s with unified partitions find the files here...

I used TWRP for quite a time.... IMHO a very good alternative to CWM with basically the same features (including backups)

9.17 aries (downloaded 10 minutes ago) works via MI recovery, not via MI updater. SMS, Camera, Video ok. Default app setting still crashes - overall looks good....

Could anybody describe a safe "rollback" method? In case anything goes wrong? A step-by-step guide for resetting the phone as a last resort could maybe be helpful (with adb and fastboot). In my case, I have problems to download the latest beta from MIUI. Can anybody help? (btw, does the Chinese...

Should be around 400MB for aries - but doesnt work either. "com.android.provision" problem > in my case both ways (MI recovery and MI Updater) did not work!

Honestly, I did wait a while as you talked about MiVideo problems and a re-upload. My remark with the installation notes are only based upon your answer in post #3816 to Kinkel74... I will try asap...

@sebsch: could you please modify the installation notes accordingly? For Mi2s still it's said: "NOTE: Install only with default Mi-Recovery. Updater App does not work!"

Do you use Whatsapp? If so, did you manage to do the SMS verification for Whatsapp after a new installation with the Google Messenger?

Can confirm because I tried base MIUI 9.10 and everything is fine - seems in fact that default and SMS app problems only exist in sMIUI

Unfortunately, I went back to 8.6, because with default app and SMS app crashes I cannot live...

Use download link on start post under "normal", select "mocha", install through normal MIUI updater app and you are done.
