Just activate the option: "Raise to wake" and you can see the fingerprint placement without pushing any buttons. Or you can double tap the screen Or turn on always on display And yes, the fingerprint spot in the new update seems less active than the previous one (it disappears quicker)

Did you turn this option on (there's a different option for double tap to sleep on lock screen)? And the function only works with stock launcher.

If you update the script correctly, it should work. BTW, it's "Xiaomi9" not "Xiaomi Mi 9".

Mi 9 fingerprint sensor works fine with temper glass. I have temper glass, and the unlock speed is almost as quick as my mi mix 2s.
