The update cycle for stable rom is different - it can take up to 2 months before a new version is released or when Xiaomi decides to do so. You will be notified in the Updater app when a new stable version is released and you won't loose your data.

Hi, it is a problem of TWRP itself, not the rom. I was also having the same problem when Oreo was released for my device and the TWRP couldn't decrypt data successfully. Then an updated TWRP was released and everything was working correctly.

The thing is that I've used these ports on custom roms like PixelExperience, AEX but not on MIUI itself because of difficulties in enabling Camera2api so they may work on cuatom roms but not on MIUI. :(

From that aspect Mi note 3 is better because you can flash whatever you want and no need to worry of bricking it. Also there is a good amount of custom roms based on Oreo and Pie also that are very good.

The only downside of Mi 8 I can think of is that it has rollback protection - you can easily brick it when switching from different roms and have to be very careful.

Mi 8 is newer device thqt has better specs and probably better software support - Android pie will be released soon. Mi note 3 is also a very good choice but global support is not very good, china rom is good but still on Android oreo. If you have the budget go with Mi 8

To switch from custom rom (Lineage, PixelExperience etc.) to xiaomi.eu you need to wipe data. To switch to stock miui rom you have to use the fastboot method.
