The updater downloads the zip packagage and boots to TWRP recovery. Installation is always done by TWRP. If you want to wipe the cache just do it. This is never a bad idea, no data will be lost.

It's a normal OTA update using the MIUI updater. Just press OK and it will be installed automatically via reboot to LRTWRP recovery. No wipe.

Just installed on my 9S via phone updater and LRTWRP recovery. Worked fine :) btw - backup of persist partition was written to the same directory where the update.zip was downloaded on the phone. Maybe a good idea to store this file in a save location.

In LRTWRP you selected advanced settings - install root - right? Try to install magisk manager apk with android packet manager. What does it say? Already installed? What happens if you start an application which requires/requests root?

To install LRTWRP recovery: fastboot flash recovery xxx.img fastboot boot xxx.img Replace xxx with name of recovery image. In LRTWRP switch language from chinese to english, enter your phones PIN and it will say decrypted successfully.
