There are notification issues with the global rom. I'd recommend the xiaomi.eu route with an unlocked bootloader. Apart from anything else, you'll get regular updates that include the latest Android security fixes.

It's really not that big a deal. The one we have works fine, it just won't back up your data partition, and there are plenty of alternatives for that.
