I must say the battery drain is apparent with 3g data and games. On standby or idle there isn't much of an issue. As soon as tasks start running it drains rapidly.

Mine shows as MIUI-JHCCNBD24.0.1 - I downloaded from 4.6.13 link last week under redmi 1s. Now confused if I already have latest version. Should I expect new changes under 4.6.20 ? (the status there says pending, so do we have to wait for a final update?)

Yes, on moderate use it lasts barely a day. When I say average use, 30 mins gaming, 2 hours browsing, 2 hours call. that's pretty much it. Not sure if its a software issue, but would be nice if the MIUI team can help

No, but it shouldn't matter. Atleast not for enabling saving photos videos directly to external sd card.
