Going from CyanogenMod to MIUI, you can't dirty flash. You need to do a full wipe of everything.

My gmail had problems syncing at times too. Did you have some messages, "Paused" in your gmail? I did. In general, my gmail works, but sometimes I had to clear data and reboot and gmail would work properly again.

You need to choose the default launcher, change wallpaper and then enable Nova Launcher. Can't change while using Nova Launcher. That's the work around.

Before installing, make a backup in TWRP. Install new ROM. If you want to go back, restore ROM in TWRP.

Are you using the default launcher? If not,switch to default launcher, apply themes then go back to the launcher of your choice.

It is normal/necessary to reroot and flash Xposed after an update. In TWRP, only wipe Dalvik/Art Cache and Cache before and after update.
