After the first boot you can download Magisk Manager from the Play Store and install Magisk v12 from the app. This way the boot partition is detected properly and installs fine.- paternick

I had the same issue trying to root with Magisk v12 but finally got it to work following this post on XDA: forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72150023&postcount=10 Using older versions of Magisk root worked on last Xiaomi.eu weekly.- paternick
