    Hi,
I'm thinking of buying the mi2s.
    My main requirements are:

    Whatsapp
    Facebook
    Taking pictures / videos
    Gmail

Does the mi2s works properly with regards of the above? For example, no problem sharing pictures and videos through whatsapp, etc.?

    Do you recommend it overall?

I'm a bit concerned about the lack of development and roms, since Xiaomi doesn't release their kernel.

It is just great and the absence of kernel sources isn't a big deal because some modding is still possible and above all miui comes with many features that on other phones are available only on custom roms. Definitely worth your money.

you should think about the issues (mi2 dont know if fixed in mi2s)

    -with some operators bad reception
-3g akku drain (if u use edge no problem)
-not many custom roms, no actual vanilla android (if u like stable and fast miui no problem)
    -microphone problems
-bad support if somethings defect because u have to send it back to china
-very thick and big weight in comparison to actual phones (s3, nexus4)
-miui and miPhone is an iPhone ios derivat....

    pros:
    -very good cam
    -very good akku with edge
-out of the box fast and stable for dialy use
    -very good display
    -every week updates for miui
    -best phone in 4.3 formfactor

now u have to choose ;)

    Hi,

    Thank you for your answer.
Can please elaborate on these two:
I've read that there is 4.1 JB clean android that I can install, if I don't like MIUI. Is there a problem with it?
That's new to me. You mean that the other side of the conversion can't hear you properly? Is this a common problem with all Mi2/Mi2S phones?

    Thanks

sorry i meant a nexus 4 android version
there is a 4.1 android version which works very good and fast with xiaomi. but this version isnt updated often..

and with the microphone there a workarounds flashing older radios. it depends on some radioversion. i had the best microphone usage at 3.3.29!

It's a great phone with awesome battery runtime and speedy at that too.

Also it offers you a vanilla android version if you don't like miui.

forgive my ignorance, but how do you apply this edge and what exactly does it effect?

You don't apply it. When you are connected to the network in 2G mode, if the network supports it the phone will be able to connect using edge. Don't focus on the word edge, focus on 2G.

Basically, you don't want edge, since it's slower than 3G. 3G or HDSPA is always better...

I'm a bit confused: Ingmar says that battery is not so good in 3G, but ColdBird says battery runtime is awsome.
    So which is it...?

Ok, thanks. I thought it was a more battery friendly way to have data transfer enabled. But with 2g, at least with my Greek provider, there’s no data transfer.

Battery is good actually. If the phone is under heavy usage out won't last a day tho. I got myself a 3000mAh battery and using power saving mode I get a full day of mid-high usage without problems. When I don't need to maximize usage I stick with normal mode and at the end of the day I still have ~50% battery. On the stock battery you could find yourself with almost no power at the end of the day on normal mode with mid usage.

When you write mid usage, how many screen hours do you mean?

When I say mid usage I mean 10-15 minutes of screen on per hour. Anyway you will find that different performance profiles can help you saving battery. The two screens have been shot right now and the phone is set at power saving mode. I consider this heavy usage.

The only stupid thing in this thread is your pointless comment.

Fact is I got helpful and honest answers from other users.

    Hahaha amen.

You ask for opinions, you deserve them.
I guess there are the odd and unfortunate latter. :)

My story about battery life is simple.

At home this thing is basically my mini tablet, on the whole time, browsing the internet via Wi-Fi.

At work and all its my.. who would have guessed that, phone... on 2g the whole time unless I look something up on the go, then I switch to 3g as required and back to 2g when I don't need it.

This way I get about 2 days battery runtime with total of 8 to 9 hours of screen on time.

I'm using the 3100mah battery btw.

And what happens if you stay on 3G the whole time?

3G increases the battery usage under low reception and of course if transferring high amounts of data. But unless the reception is really bad the main battery eaters will be the screen and the cpu. I'd recommend the extended battery because of this and because the special cover used for the battery does protect the camera glass from scratches.

The problem is there is no protective case for the 3100 battery.
And if the phone falls facing down without a case, it may break, or the screen will shatter, etc.
