Mi-box can install third-party apps without root. Here is the procedure:

connect to PC: power-on box, connect it with data cable to pc. Then open snappea. snappea is a very popular android app manager in china. (http://www.snappea.com/).
After 2-3 minutes, snappea will recognize mi-box.

The following pic shows the apps installed by snappea (provided in the attachments). From top to bottom, these apps are: iqiyi movie(www.iqiyi.com), RE manager(root explorer), togic live(http://www.togic.com/livetv), Rabbit video(www.tuziv.tv/), Rabbit tv assistant, Rabbit tv desktop.

then, you can reboot the box, below shows the start-up launchers. The bottom one is the original mi-box launcher. Geeks should choose the top one.

and wait a moment:

togic tv:

rabbit tv. the 7th option corresponds to hollywood films:

ooops, I cannot upload the apps until the bm grant the permission of uploading 10MB per file for me.

AD: For guys who wanna buy Mi-box, I recommend my store:

Thanks to all for helping to show us the way on using the system. I can confirm that I have tried both Wine and PlayOnLinux (front end to wine) ubuntu 12.04 and it installs but I see just a black rendering box. Using a WindowsXP VM( Virtual Box) snappea works and sees the MiBox (aka millet box) connects to snappea.

Great to hear about all those different apps we can install. It would be great if you guys could add links where to download them. Google can help but sometimes we are all lazy...

Works like a charm!

Took my Box to my office and installed everything in like 5 minutes!
I got xbmc from their homepage and just installed it through SnapPea. You will find it later in the launcher.

I can't install apps using SnapPea.
When I connect MiBox to my laptop using USB, SnapPea does detect MiBox, but in menu "
USB Connected" it says "MiBox_iCNTV -Not connected".
When I want to install an app, it only show my mobile as device to install to.
Do I miss some driver? Is there driver for MiBox?
In Computer Management I do see "Android Composite ADB Interface" under "Android Tablet".
