Can someone please explain to me how can I update to the current version from a very old version?

I have a Xiaomi mi2 with miui V5 (4.12.5) that was in a storage for a very long time... :$
I have downloaded TWRP for aries but now what?

Thanks!

You need to re-partition your device for new roms, I suggest you tu make a Full backup and flash newest rom from MiFlash Tool.

I managed to upgrade :)
I have a question though:
When I made factory reset through TWRP it asked me if I want to install SuperSU since I don't have root access.
I gave it OK but I am not sure if it was the right decision :X
The device is going to serve a little child.

What does SuperSU is good for and how can I remove it if I don't want it?

Root permission can easily remove from SuperSU app, there are no problem.
Root permission can speed up the phone and other things, I think if a child don't know that are installed he don't use it Root can be very helpful.
Make your choice

May I ask if there were problems with any loss of information/applications and could You please give a step by step guide?
I am in a similar situation that I want to bring a still double boot partition MIUI 4.12.5 phone to "moder times".
I understood that I need to first a specific ROM to unify the partitions, then TWRP and then the latest ROM can be installed is that correct? Or some more steps are missing?
Which ROM did you use to unify the partitions?

Thanks.

The following guide was given to me by graw2:
*** Disclaimer: most of the links are broken, I have no idea where can you find the specific versions...

1. Download MiFlash and install on your PC as administrator: http://obigota.d.miui.com/tools/MiPhone20151028.exe
2. Download 5.11.26 china fastboot ROM and unpack to your root of C drive: http://obigota.d.miui.com/5.11.26/aries_images_5.11.26_20151104.0000.4_5.0_cn_cd4c92679b.tgz
3. Run MiFlash as administrator, click on Browse and locate unpacked fastboot folder
4. Reboot your phone in Fastboot mode: Switch of the phone first, and then push and hold Volume Down and Power buttons together until fastboot screen is appeared
5. Connect your phone to PC via USB cable. Wait few seconds while driver is installed
6. Click Refresh button in MiFlash to get your phone recognized by MiFlash
7. Click Flash All option in bottom of the MiFlash window
8. Click Flash button in MiFlash (It will wipe all and merge systems and data in 1 step)
9. Wait a lot until your phone reboot automatically
10. Download xiaomi.eu multilang 5.11.26 release and copy to internal storage of your phone, and install it via updater app: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24269982087005451
11. After installation Reboot to Recovery Mode and make wipes in this order: CACHE >DATA>SD>ALL DATA
12. Reboot to system

This version will give you the unified partition.

Next, to get latest ROM you may repeat the above steps with the following changes:

step2: http://obigota.d.miui.com/6.3.24/aries_images_6.3.24_20160307.0000.16_5.0_cn_b5fa6d20f9.tgz
step10: Download the latest ROM https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/7-3-23.39325/
step11: After installation Reboot to Recovery Mode (you will get TWRP that is integrated in the new xiaomi.eu ROMs instead of MiRecovery) and make factory reset via TWRP (wipe dalvik+wipe cache +wipe data)

Good luck!

Thanks a lot! I hope it will serve many of us.
As a curiosity, in the presented method, is the final unified partition a common let's say 32GB space accessible by the user via USB or are the 2 system partitions merged but still a separate memory?
