Solution is dont use built in VPN , use a third party one.

I use OpenVPN for Android by Arne Schwabe.
Its on the Play Store

I tried some piece of software that was provided by the manufacturer of my DSL-modem/AP (FritzBox 7390) which "just works" from everywhere in the world, except from China. So I will give OpenVPN a chance and try it out when I am back in China. Thanks for the reply!

Make sure its OpenVPN by Arne Schwabe , there are other OpenVPN apps about but they are not the same.

Your VPN app is only as good as the VPN service you use it for. I definitely would recommend a paid for VPN service, rather than a free one.
