Xiaomi 3 Update fail

Hi all ;]

Updated the other day, and half-bricked the phone. It was hanging on the startup 'MI' screen, but I could access recovery via Power+Volume up. I found out how to flash via recovery, but am now finding that there's no way to access the internal storage to put a new ROM on there. The only time windows 7 detects the phone is when the phone is connected + power is off. At those times however, the MTP usb driver fails to install and the driver I downloaded doesn't work.
Any ideas as to why it's not working?

have you tried to boot to system 2 and copy the rom file you wish to flash into the storage and flashing again?
