I'm not sure you can do it with the stock messaging app, however try a 3rd party app called Handcent SMS from the market, I believe this allows you to allocate a specific sms tone to an individual contact.

I had the same issue, however I found a solution on xda (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964333&highlight=gps) <- although this was for HTC DHD. I only installed GPS Status from the market, and reset your GPS data, this worked a treat for me!
