Auto updates would pose a security risk, there's always a balance between usability and security.
I think keeping track of the forum and even the updater app is a good balanced method.
Not sure but after updating the app it doesn't seem to work with root/magisk.
Even with PIF module removed it fails play integrity.
Had to use Titanium to find the app(?) and clear it's updates, then use PIF again to pass.
I guess the app does the same as PIF by spoofing the device fingerprint for play integrity, ut won't affect magisk itself.
The dev already said if you remove all updates from the app you can still use PIF and thus Magisk
Update PIF to v14 and place the pif.json from the telegram group in root/data/adb
Then reboot.

It's a for now working fingerprint supplied by the PIF developer.
V13.9 is broken again.
You can update to v14 but are required to input a working device fingerprint yourself.
Perhaps we can share any working solutions here since it is likely less public than the XDA module forum
