I don't know about your update problem. But I had a Hongmi 1S that had the same serial number. Not a fake phone, got it from the official website of Xiaomi. I even checked it at the Xiaomi Center to be sure.

But why sometimes it works and sometimes not? I've just been able to copy two folders of Jpeg and MP4 directly to the Sdcard without problem this time... Same FTP software, same wifi, same settings. Nothing changed.

There are some chinese pages talking about mipad root so its definitively possible. Xiaomi isnt cheap chinese s**t products but I'm careful with my things so rarely dropped them =)

I guess it will take longer than phones as that's the first and only products. Maybe in 3-4 months itll be more easy. And in 6 months it might even be possible to directly buying it.
