I know this problem. Have had it sometimes. If you have TWRP wipe cache and dalvik an try again. Sometimes it fits. Or reinstall the app, where the backup hangs.

I am using sMiUI stable 7.2.8 and no problems like this. Did you wipe cache and dalvik? Have you tried a factory reset before installing ROM (Wipe cache, dalvik, data)?

I think MiUI-Backup doesn't need root.

My TWRP also can't mount sd-Card with FAT32! The link of @Santigt doesn't work.

I never tried... For me it is a better way to take a mSD or USB and make a Miui-Backup or Titanium (root), faster and you have it always also without any online connection.

Did you allow TWRP to modify the system? Probably this option is the solution

Take for example Titanium Backup or SD-Maid with root permission and delete it. May solve your problem.

No problem with sMiui 6.5.12
