My understanding is that you would need to go back to a stock Chinese ROM, and then either use it or unlock the bootloader to install a ROM. But I don't know the process, and unlocking a Chinese HyperOS device seems very complicated nowadays.

You need to check if your phone have an unlocked bootloader, and which ROM you are currently using.

As long as your ROM is a previous Xiaomi eu ROM, you can update. But it is already written in the first post and you don't give any details.

You would need to find someone to flash back the chinese ROM on your device (I am assuming you have a Chinese model, and what you call a wrong ROM is a global ROM and what you call stock ROM is the Chinese ROM) Keep in mind, it has become very difficult (if not impossible nowadays) to unlock...

If you are using the Xiaomi.eu ROM, you can manually download the file and update.

1) The original goal is to make Chinese models usable in Europe. 2) It is not a universal solution, chinese model users would then have the same issue 3) There is no guarantee for the developers that the ROM with modified modem.img would work all the time, unless they own the model and do manual...

There is no preference that I know of, but maybe if you told us what is your smartphone model, it could help understand the context of your question. The versions are kept up to date

I don't know the reason, but if they had to keep up with the TWRP versions for 40+ supported devices, and now with risks for the end user... I would not call it "slightly more work".

I don't think there is a Xiaomi.eu custom ROM for this device currently.

I would try to change the battery, it seems to be the most obvious reason why you may have this issue.
