Rn3 Qualcomm Google Sign In After Factory Reset Set

I sold my phone after a factory reset via the settings. It was running MIUI 8 stock. Now the guy who bought it says it is asking for a previously synchronised Google account. Apparently this is a known issue. Anyway round it? He can't get to the recovery menu either, just fastboot...
