Thank you! I had the same problem on my Mi8SE - using the weekly build. I tried all the suggestions with no luck. But when I install the 5-2-5010 release everything works well. AA starts on the car dash whenever I plug the phone.

There are different versions of the TWRP 3.2.3. The newest one will not work. You should install the 1102 version first, then install the ROM, format, wipe etc. then before booting into the new ROM you install TWRP 3.2.3 1227 and then it will boot correctly. At least that's what worked for me...

I just installed xiaomi.eu for the first rime (9.4.18). I see no lag on my Mi 8 SE. It appear to run really well. Much better than the Chinese ROM.
