Not receiving SMS verification, on the bootloader unlock process

I resolved this problem by installing Whatsapp. As soon as I allowed Whatsapp access to my contacts and messages, I immediately received a message with code. I thought that this may be working after reading miui FAQ regarding not receiving code - they said, that if there is a whatsapp account...
