New MIUI11 20.3.5 - Mi 8 - Google Messages crashes

I can't use Google Message anymore.
Every time I send a new message the app crashes.

Alternatively, I now use Signal as an SMS client. works without having to reinstall the whole rom.

Same here on mi9, crashes when attaching pictures. I tried going back to old roms but they get stuck in boot loop when trying to dirty flash.

Can you please explain what the difference is between that rom and the ones afterwards that I had problems with?

Can you please tell me if I should stay on that weekly to keep messages working or if I should be able to keep messages working on other roms?

I have clean flashed the latest weeklies multiple times (and even formatted data) but still have problems
