No notification icons. 3 dots (ellipsis) shown instead. Why?

I was away from MIUI for a few months (using another phone) and I came back recently. Installed 3.3.8 and now I don't get any notification icons in the notification bar, just "..." instead. This means I can't tell what notifications I have at a glance; I have to pull the bar down every time I want to check.

Is this rather annoying behaviour design intent or is it a bug? I much prefer it the old way, like it is on other android phones.

Edit: my phone is a Xiaomi MI-One Plus

Settings - Status bar - App notification.
Then select apps you want to see in status bar.
