You need to turn on the rear display in Settings->Rear Display->User Rear Display (toggle on).

Can you use the backscreen in other modes to. Like in pro mode or portrait mode? Just curious since we can't on miui 12.5.11.

I have not used pro mode, but I have used it with portrait, so I would say Yes.
