Hi everyone,

I am posting here because I have been dealing with a persistent calling issue on my Xiaomi 17 Pro Max and I would like to know whether anyone else has experienced the same problem, found a workaround, or knows of a more effective way to report it to Xiaomi.

Device: Xiaomi 17 Pro Max
Codename: popsicle
Current ROM: OS3.0.315.0.WPBCNXM
Android / HyperOS: Android 16 / HyperOS 3.0
ROM type: Official Chinese ROM

During a normal voice call using the earpiece, the incoming audio randomly disappears in the middle of the conversation. The call itself remains connected, but I can no longer hear the other person.

If I enable speakerphone, the audio returns immediately. However, when I disable speakerphone again, the earpiece remains completely silent for the rest of that call. Ending the call and starting a new one usually restores normal operation temporarily, until the issue happens again.

The problem is intermittent and does not occur on every call, but it happens often enough to make normal phone use unreliable.

It also happens across different calling applications, not only the stock Phone app, which suggests that it may be related to the system audio routing or telephony audio path rather than a specific application.

The issue has persisted through every HyperOS build I have used, from:

OS3.0.45.0.WPBCNXM

to the current:

OS3.0.315.0.WPBCNXM

Restarting the phone does not permanently resolve it.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Start or answer a call using the normal earpiece mode.
  2. Continue the call for several minutes.
  3. The earpiece audio randomly disappears without warning.
  4. Enable speakerphone and the audio returns immediately.
  5. Disable speakerphone and the earpiece remains silent.

Reports already submitted

I have already submitted two reports through the Xiaomi Feedback app:

  • Feedback ID 801985843, submitted on 22 April.
  • Feedback ID 802030334, submitted on 3 June.
Both are still marked as “Submitted”, without any reply or status update.

I have also posted several times on the official Xiaomi Global forums:

A Xiaomi Global moderator advised me to report the issue on the Chinese forums, so I also created posts there in both Chinese and English:

Several users there reported experiencing the same or a very similar issue, but I have still not received any useful response from Xiaomi.

I understand that Xiaomi.eu is an independent community and is not officially affiliated with Xiaomi. I am posting here mainly to ask:

  • Has anyone experienced this issue on the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max or another HyperOS 3 device?
  • Has anyone found a temporary workaround or permanent solution?
  • Could this be related to the modem, audio configuration, Bluetooth, VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, proximity sensor or another system component?
  • Is there any diagnostic log I could collect while the issue is happening?
  • Is there another reporting or escalation channel that I may have missed?
Any information, testing suggestions or confirmation from other users would be greatly appreciated.

Having ythe same issue. Some suggested turning off voLTE but turning that off makes most of my calls not to connect instead.

Im on 3.0.317 - still issue with calls cutting out unless I turn on speakerphone.
Shortly after purchasing my Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, I unlocked the bootloader and installed the Xiaomi.eu ROM, hoping it would fix the issue. This was back when the early 300-ish builds were available.

I later returned to the official Chinese ROM because I wanted to see whether restoring the stock ROM and relocking the bootloader would solve the problem. Unfortunately, the issue persisted.

I have now unlocked the bootloader again and installed Xiaomi.eu version 3.0.317. So far, the issue has not occurred again - but it may still be too early to say for certain.

I'm currently running the official Chinese HyperOS 4 (Android 17), version OS4.0.0.44.XPBCNXM, and the issue still persists.

However, the behaviour has changed.

Previously, whenever the earpiece stopped working during a phone call, the only way to restore audio was to end the call and make a new one.

Now, when the earpiece stops working, I can restore it simply by switching to speakerphone and then switching back to the earpiece. The audio immediately returns.

I strongly suspect that this issue may be related to the fact that the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max was never officially released globally.

My theory involves the TAC (Type Allocation Code), which consists of the first eight digits of the IMEI and identifies the device's manufacturer and model.

Since the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max was designed primarily for the Chinese market, international mobile network operators may not have fully tested, certified, or provisioned this particular model for their networks.

This could potentially lead to compatibility issues with VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), particularly if the device's modem configuration or carrier profiles are not fully compatible with the local network.

However, the fact that switching between speakerphone and earpiece immediately restores audio also suggests a possible software-level audio routing issue within HyperOS.

It would be interesting to investigate whether this is caused by a HyperOS audio routing bug, a modem firmware issue, or an incompatibility between the device's IMS configuration and international mobile network operators.

Either way, this is clearly an issue that Xiaomi needs to investigate and address.

I like your theory! Def something Xiaomi should look into. Possibly fixed in HO4 if it's a software/firmware issue.

As I mentioned, I'm using HyperOS 4 already... And it doesn't fix it. Unfortunatly
Sorry, missed the version part. That's a shame. Seems like peeps in China is having this issue as well so less likely to be a global compatibility issue.
