I can confirm this works. I used AdAway instead of NextDNS (AdAway has both a root [edits hosts] and stock [local VPN] mode). This is pretty annoying so I hope it can be addressed pretty soon since this seems to be a XEU issue (it's only present on >14.0.5.0). I ordered a card from Monzo too...
