I don't know what to suggest. I just had the same problem start with one of my MI 8. Two identical phones, on identical firmware - one having connectivity issues/dropouts (exactly as you described), one perfectly fine.

Honestly, I think it has to be Pixel Experience (CAF version). Smoothest and best battery life by some margin (in my opinion).

Try SMS Backup+, back it up to your Google account - that makes it easier to restore it to your new phone too. I use that regularly and it works well.
