It happened in the previous version as well but it seemed to have gotten worse on this version and crashes for no apparent reason with a pop up saying messaging has stopped working. It happens as random times when I'm texting and causes some messages to have the "sending" notification to stick.

I would clear the cache of the app. So open up the Settings -> App.
Find Mms.apk, and force stop & clear cache.

Hi iBotPeaches, I just tried to do what you said but the cache was empty anyway so will see if it continues to crash on me. Will update if it does.
