Apps closing on switch, RAM usage

Hi,
I thought I'd ask here after being bothered for like the last 2 years, before I go and buy a new phone.

My Xiaomi 12 (cupid) has the tendency to close apps, presumably because it thinks it needs to free some RAM.
The behaviour is:
- have an app open (best example: firefox, 1 tab)
- have to enter credentials on a website
- app switch to keepass, select credentials
- switch back to browser
- tab reloads as if browser was closed in the background.

this also happens frequently with other combinations, for example:
- have komoot hiking navigation running
- switch to camera app, this already is accompanied by stuttering and loading
- take photo
- switch back to komoot
- komoot reloads, hence navigation & tracking is stopped and must be resumed (luckily komoot supports this)

to me, this looks a lot like the phone is aggressivly trying to free up RAM, even though it always reports > 2GB free anytime.
also I wonder why it always has to close the most recent app I've used a couple seconds ago?

I've already set the usuals like no powersaving, allow autostart etc pp that is MIUI / HyperOS specific, and it just doesnt help.
I've also enabled and disabled the RAM extension, it does not help at all.

this behaviour is not new, I think its since HyperOS launched...

interestingly, my father in law got the same phone a year later and stuck with the global ROM.
It does NOT show the symptoms my phone has.

My Installation is quite old, I've bought the phone in April 2022 and immediately wiped it to install xiaomi.eu ROM.
From there, I've upgraded and upgraded and upgraded ...

Maybe someone knows that behaviour and has a hint for me?

Thanks in advance
