I tried to restore a nandroid (cwm) backup but i get a checksum error (mds).

On what phone? Using what version of Rom Manager and CWM?

There have been issues with some devices using the latest cwm with it corrupting the sd card partition.

Can it restore a previous older nandroid or flash a new rom?

It is a known issue (at least on SGS i9000). There is a zip file that you should install before each restore/backup to fix this issue.
