I'm currently on 7.1.3.0 stable and I was wondering if any tried to uptade to miui 8 using the update app directly and if it is possible. I already unlocked the bootloader time ago.

Well, did you check if there's any update with the update app?
Otherwise you will have to install TWRP and install the rom.
Or put the new rom (rename it to update.zip) in the storage of your phone (with usb cable connected to pc) and install with recovery (choose update).
