Starting August 1, 2025, thanks to the extension of European cybersecurity regulations within the Radio Equipment Directive (RED 2014/53/EU, with Delegated Act 2022/30), companies must prevent the installation of unauthorized software. This translates into a practical ban on bootloader unlocking for phones sold in the EU.

hi there , thanks' a lot for reminding US with this update post.

we rather see those " new rules " as a temporary " hiccup " since EU regulator also ruled to have app store and play store allowing and enabling for the side-loading of apps and not necessarily unauthorized software.

that translates into:
once the two years legal warranty has expired and equipment manufacturers aren't providing software maintenance with updates [ i.e: today... seven years after a smartphone first appears as ready for the EU single market ] then bootloader can be unlocked facilitating system update and the addition of security patches to the smartphone.

according to US " bootloader cannot be unlocked " only when that android smartphone model was first introduced in the market on or after 2018 and if a condition is met thus that smartphone model still getting official system updates and security patches released by either a alphabet subsidiary or the manufacturer itself.

take care,

marc
