Removing screen protector?

Sorry if this is completely stupid question but is it safe to remove the plastic from the screen?

It creates a sharp edge on the edge of the screen which is driving me nuts with edge swiping gestures...

I took it off this is so so much better now. The sharp edge made the phone feel cheap, like the screen wasn't properly embedded to the frame.
