Suddenly stuck on default launcher. Choosing another closes the screen and it reverts to default

Hey. My phone ran out of battery while on and I don't know if this matters but Nova launcher at next boot when charged was not default anymore.

I try to reselect Nova and it just closes that settings app without commiting the change. I noticed Nova lost all permissions so I gave it everything back and it still does it.

Installed a different launcher and same deal so not Nova

Feels like a Xiaomi bug but perhaps this ROM. Any advice?

I've even tried to set as default within Nova and it does the same

Not rooted. Just this ROM and has been fine for months literally until today. Google suggests nothing I've not tried

App permissions all good. Is there anything in developer options maybe?

Really don't like the default launcher. Current workaround is Nova on home screen gives me my old "desktop" back but essentially the Settings app - pretty fundamental! - just doesnt stay open so I can't even choose Nova when selecting default launcher (the act of pressing on the Nova checkbox - or any other launcher - is what closes it)

You said "it just closes that settings app without commiting the change", that sounds like a crash.
You did not attach any log or crash summary.
You can always try setting with ADB.

adb shell cmd package set-home-activity <package-name>/<activity-name>

I suspect is actually Xiaomis issue as I've seen this on Reddit also from the default ROM

Intensely annoying bug.

Workaround: Nova icon on desktop lets me switch to that anytime
