Xiaomi.eu: Do I need to be root or just unlock the bootloader to install the custom ROM?

Hello, I'm new to custom ROMs. I have a Redmi Note 13 4G, and I'm thinking about installing the xiaomi.eu ROM, for various customization reasons. However, I heard that when you root your device, some banking, social media and gaming apps don't work.

So, is it mandatory to root to install a custom ROM? Or is just unlocking the bootloader enough? If I unlock the bootloader, will the apps work normally on the custom ROM? I tried to do some research, but I didn't find much related stuff on the internet. x)

- xiaomi.eu does not contain/use root.
- installing xiaomi.eu ROM only requires an unlocked bootloader
- on xiaomi.eu ROM there may be a problem with specific applications that require strong integrity (they will not work). The reason is the unlocked bootloader.
