Hi.

It's been a while since I flashed some ROM's so I am out of the loop a bit.

I just bought a Mi 8 SE off ebay. The ROM is the so called fake ROM MIUI GLOBAL 9.5.8.0 (Android 8.1). I intended to flash a new ROM and to my surprise it already contains a custom TWRP recovery. The TWRP is version 3.2.3 1102. Is this a really old one? Should I reflash the latest TWRP from TWRP.me or can I use this old TWRP to flash?

What I want to do is flash Xiaomi.eu MIUI 11 20.3.26 (Android 10). Do I need to format DATA in TWRP and then transfer the Xiaomi.eu ROM to the phone when I try and flash? Do I need any GAPPS when I flash Xiaomi.eu ROMs?

One more thing. Out of interest how would I go about flashing the last stock Chinese ROM for the MI 8 SE? Would I use MiFlash tool?

Any tips would be gratefully received.

Assuming that you have the unlocked bootloader (an unlocked padlock when you start the phone) you could flash with XiaoMiTool V2 that downloads the recovery automatically and installs it for you automatically. I not recommend installing xiaomi.eu with that tool, preferably do it manually, greetings and luck.
MiFirm from this page you can download the rom you like and it explains how to do it.

If there's TWRP, then the bootloader must be unlocked. That TWRP might work just fine, but I'd install latest anyway: https://twrp.me/xiaomi/xiaomimi8se.html

May I ask why MIUI 11? There's MIUI 12.5 also, and this is the latest ROM: https://sourceforge.net/projects/xi...i_MI8SE_V12.5.1.0.QEBCNXM_v12-10.zip/download

And no, you don't need GAPPS.

Hi guys.

Thanks for the swift replies!

Yes the bootloader is unlocked.

I didn't know about that tool Marce0c0 but I may flash the TWRP the normal way. The only thing I am worried about in flashing it the normal way is do I need to hold vol + and power when it reboots in order to make it stick?

Hi Bec de Xorbin. I didn't know about 12.5 MIUI for the Mi 8 SE and have decided that it is the ROM I am going to install! Can I just go over the procedure with you guys?

1. Flash newest TWRP via fastboot.
1a. On reboot hold vol+ and power to make TWRP stick. (Is this needed???)
2. In TWRP format Data and type 'yes' ( Do I need to wipe Dalvik/cache/data or do a factory reset???)
3. Reboot recovery ( Is this step needed???)
4. Adb sideload Xiaomi.eu MIUI 12.5.
5. Flash Xiamoi.eu 12.5
6. Reboot.
7. Enjoy!

Does that look like the correct order? I am just worried as I have heard about the fastbook stuck issue. Do I need to worry about that?

Also, when I boot into TWRP it says 'Mount, decrypt data'. Do I need to do anything here or can I just cancel that?

I've also read about DM-Verity. What is that?

Thanks.

first of all do you have the link of the rom that you are going to flash?

I have a normal MI 8 and in my case the xiaomi.eu is done by recovery but there are also some that can be done by fastboot, the steps that you indicated seem to be by fastboot which makes it much easier from what I was reading.

When you start twrp it asks you to mount it on the partition. Personally, I give "keep system read only".

I was reading that it is a protection by google to malicious attacks but just look for more information in the forum unaware of this until now.

Have a great day!

This is the ROM I intend to flash : https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/miui-12-0-12-1-12-2-12-5-stable-release.56191/

Yes I want to flash the ROM via TWRP.

I'm going to give it a go later today. Fingers crossed it all goes fine! This fake ROM that the phone came with is truely terrible and crashes all the time.

How did you go? good news? :3
Hi mate.

I haven't plucked up the courage yet! I was thinking of sending it back for a refund but i might keep it. Will probably try and flash it this weekend. I'll update the thread on success or failure.

Ok so I tried just flashing the lastest twrp on twrp.me and it didn't stick. When I typed 'fastboot boot twrp.img' after flashing the screen just goes black. When I flash twrp and type 'fastboot reboot recovery' and try holding power and vol up it just stays at the boot logo - it never gets to twrp.

Maybe I should have tried updating to the latest twrp from with the twrp that the phone came with but now that has disappeared.

I may try so_nuna's method when I get time.

If the steps in my answer are not clearly described and you do not understand them, you can directly ask me here.

Good luck!
