Xiaomi.eu ROMs are not based on china ROMs anymore. The only thing they include from china ROMs is Automated Tasks. That's it. China ROMs have a much more stable system and they also have a wonderful permission manager. If you don't believe me, go ahead and install a china ROM on your device...

Did you follow the instructions on this page or the one I linked from miui.com? Note that all you had to do was copy a file named icons. That's all I did. Anyway I'm glad you worked it out! You have to repeat the process after every update I'm afraid.

@Trou Macacq Yes, without root! But you need TWRP or some other custom recovery. (which I assume you already have since you installed a xiaomi.eu ROM!)

@ingbrzy I asked this before but you didn't answer. Mi 5s Plus doesn't have the 7.12.14 China ROM but instead they released v7.12.15 for it. So how do you have this ROM on the download page? Did you mean 7.12.15 ?

@ingbrzy Are you sure this ROM works on all devices? On miui.com I only found this version for a handful of devices. E.g my device, Mi 5s Plus, doesn't have this version but you have included it: en.miui.com/download-315.html#457
