New Bluetooth earphone microphone not working on MI 9

I have a Motorola Verve Loop Bluetooth earphone. Its microphone isn't picking up sound when on a phone call or recording something on any social app, instead it is picking up sound from the phone's microphone instead which makes my voice sounds so far away. This problem didn't exist on MIUI 11 but started when updated to MIUI 12 and is still present now. I am on MIUI 12 build 21.7.14.
