Mi 10 5G - 8/128 Gb. - Miui 12.1 - 20.8.25 - Android version 11 RKQ1.200710.002 (umi)
When casting to the laptop, and sleep time is reached (I tested on both 2 and 1 minutes), rather than going into sleep mode, the Mi10 screen starts to flicker erratically and continuously. Approx 15 seconds before sleep time is reached, the screen correctly dims. I have tested with the 'Always-on display' both on and off. It reacts the same. Touching the screen does not stop it, but pressing the power button does. The picture on the laptop monitor is not affected, and continues to display from the Mi 10. The sleep mode is reached correctly when not casting to (linked to) the laptop monitor, ie, no flickering.
As a control, I used my Mi 6 - 4/64 Gb - Miui 12.1 - 20.6.18 - Android version 9 PKQ1.190118.001 (sagit)
That went into sleep mode perfectly when it should have done, when casting to the laptop. That does not have the 'Always-on' display option. This therefore seems to function as it should have done.
