Does handset mic work with headphones

Hey all. My prev android phones and my iPhones hand set mics all work when I have headphones in. When using a mi2s I have to unplug the headphones to speak. Is this the same for everyone? Does anyone know of a workaround?

I am talking about std headphones... Not hands free headphones with mic. Obviously.
