I just got this phone in the USA and realized it picked up my google fi for data but SMS, calling, etc. didn't work at all.
Turns out Xiaomi has some odd or outdated APNs for google fi and I assume other non-chinese brands.
I crossed checked the apn, discovered they were wrong on the device, changed them in settings to be right.....sms, calls, etc. are now working.
I'm still waiting for the 168 hour wait to unlock the bootloader and put on the EU rom so maybe the problem doesn't exist there but just an FYI.
