The gesture initiation happens when you touch the left/right corners of the gesture indicator ("gesture bar"), so yes, when you hide it, you can't initiate the gesture.
Not a perfect implementation, but you can blame Xiaomi for that.

gestures with nova launcher also stop working
You can't use full screen gestures with third-party launchers on Android 11 ROMs, this is a long-known issue, read carefully before hijacking others' threads.

Hm, it was working just fine on 20.12.28 and official EEA ROM...
Did they remove that feature and made it work with the gesture bar visible only now?
 
(like right now I have a second Xiaomi phone, poco m3, with xiaomi.eu stable rom installed: it's working fine with gesture bar hidden)

It's an Android 11 limitation. No point in comparing to Stables, and definitely not to Android 10.
Xiaomi just didn't implement it wisely for Android 11.

Thank you for the clarification. I didn't know that and it didn't help that they left the animation on, when you swipe with the indicator hidden.
