Mi Smart Compact Projector - Overscan Issues

Hi all,
I've just purchased the Mi Smart Compact Projector and I'm pretty sure it's faulty but seeking confirmation nonetheless.
The projector picture doesn't fill the projected area. What I mean is, there's always a no-image border around all content, like the Overscan is screwed up or something (please see attached pics).
I'm assuming this isn't normal right?

Well... Replying to my own question after googling around:
it would seem this "is normal" due to some inherent limitations of lower-end DLP chips.
