Have you tryed to set the minimum value you want? That's the way it works now. You set the minimum value instead of the maximum. On my phone it's working fine. But for better results I had to set the minimum value in a dark room.

That's the way it is meant to be set. In dark room, so the sensor will know how bright the screen should be in dark places and adjust it accordingly.
