New Mi8 restarts when using OTG with external hard drive

My Mi 8 restarts when using an external hard drive. Using otg with a regular usb stick or a mouse works just fine.
This started on miui 11 android q(haven't tested on miui 11 pie). Works just fine on miui 10.

Presumingly it is because HDD needs to consume too much power (more than the phone can give out to OTG devices). Try connecting it through a USB hub with external power supply.

Anyway, it is not recommended to use HDDs without external power supply directly with OTG: any HDD 2,5" will consume at least 0,5A and, when it launches, even over 1A. Such currents are too high for OTG and can easily harm your phone! Perhaps in MIUI 11 protection works better and cuts off your HDD. So, you have basically 2 variants: 1) connect your HDD through a USB hub with external power supply; 2) to replace your HDD by another one with an inbuilt power supply.
