Redmi 8A Problem: "your Device Is Associated With An Existing Mi Account

Hi. I bought a Xiaomi Redmi 8A couple of weeks ago from china through airplane but it came with an expired MIUI system. I downloaded and installed the latest MIUI system but the phone has locked now saying that the phone is already associated with another account so that I have to put Xiaomi Redmi account password to activate the phone. But it has a Chinese number and in from Malawi.It does not let me sign in with my account...

Hello, I'm sorry to tell u the is some ****ery afoot here. Of the nefarious kind. So the same thing just happened to me about 2 hours ago. When I was finally able to get into my phone it had been wiped clean. Factory reset. Even my SD card was formatted. Files I had had for many many years. I noted these last days I would get a notification saying "your device has been located" thought it was weird but didn't give it the importance it deserved. I see a few posts here with same problem and the dates are very recent. Mz guess is there was a major hack on their cloud. This is so f'ed up
