Same here... Stop working randomly since 7.0.22 stable china. Now with xiaomi.eu 6.1.14 the problem is less than before

Settings - lock screen & password - password & fingerprint - add fingerprint - I put my finger on scanner and no action...

After setting fingerprint you have to set a password for screen unlock

I tried with pattern and with PIN - scanner looks like it is dead
