Invalid Redmi Note 9 Pro MIUI restarts when connecting to Android Auto head unit

Android auto was working pefrectly until 2-3 weeks ago when I noticed that when connected to an Android Auto head unit MIUI restarts ( I see the colorful MIUI startup animation, but not the initial "Redmi powered by Android" startup screen). I tried rolling back the updates for Adnroid Audo and Google Play services to a version that was working before, but no luck - the MIUI still restarts.

My phone is Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro.
MIUI version is 12.0.2.0 (QJZEUXM), Android version is 10.QKQ1.191215.002.

Tried with anoter phone of the same model - exactly the same result.
Tried with a totally different phone (Asus with Android 9) with the same Android Auto app version - works perfectly.

Please help. I use AA on a daily basis and really need it.

Are you using the custom ROM from xiaomi.eu or stock ROM?

Then you should seek help in Mi Community, this is not official Xiaomi support but a forum related to a custom ROM.
