My device is K30 5G, piccaso, updated from weekly 12.9 (android 11) to weekly 2.9(Android 12) via "xiaomi.eu_multi_HMK305G_22.2.9_v13-12-fastboot", without wiping data.

[Sympton]
After the update, the UI is always crashing.
1. Even I did nothing, the UI restarted after a certain period periodically (about every 3 min).
2. But the system was not restarting as I did not need to input the SIM PIN.
3. Fox recovery can not decrypt my /data, without asking the gesture pattern.
4. I can not backup in this situation as the UI restart will interrupt the backup, thus I am not sure if the backup is completed.

I struggled for 7 hours, googling and trying other ROM but failed. So I lost hope and was about to wipe data.
But a post in Chinese saved me. I did the following things, which I am not sure is the key.

[I did]
1. Flash "xiaomi.eu_multi_HMK305G_22.1.6_v13-12-fastboot", reboot failed.
2. Flash "xiaomi.eu_multi_HMK305G_22.2.9_v13-12-fastboot" again. UI restart continues.
3. Before the UI restart, turn off "WIFI, Data, location".
4. Before the UI restart, clear all the data of "launcher, setting, security".
5. Uninstall the SIM card. Until now, the UI restart continues.
6. Reboot the device. And I tried to backup after the reboot.
7. To my surprise, this time the UI restart never came out. So I did not need to wipe data.
8. Even after a reboot, it still works fine.

[Conclusion]
1. Before updating to Android 12, do a backup to prepare for a data wipe.
2. If you encounter the same situation as mine, try steps 3,4,5,6 in [I did].
3. If it recovers, congratulations. If not maybe a data wipe is necessary.

All you said has been talked about in the forums.
Maybe the time spent experimenting & typing all this would have been better spent on searching and reading.

I guess experience is really the best teacher for some people. ;)

Ah, good to know I am not alone.
I think I need to broaden my search scope, as I only read some posts in the K30 forum and the weekly 22.2.9 ROM release post.
And I found some discussions about updater crash.

May I ask normally where is this kind of discussion? Or what are the keywords? For example, the link to the discussion regarding my experience.
I really regret spending 7 hours searching and trying to downgrade......

Questions 1 & 2 are related
Keyword = sim
A few post suggested clearing data of permissions app, using English language, etc

Question 3
Keywords = android 12 twrp
Decryption not working with android 12

There's no particular link dedicated to your issue that's why you have to search, read and see what applies to your issue.

It takes time

I checked a post regarding SIM. Frankly speaking, their symptom is not similar to mine, although maybe it will also lead me to uninstall SIM.
In his case, "A pop-up shows up indicating that "com.android.phone" has been crashing.".
But for me, nothing comes out, just the UI restart periodically.

And regarding Q3, I am using fox recovery, not twrp rec. so it looks like both do not support android 12. That is why decryption does not work, right?

As you said, reading them one by one is really time-consuming.
But if I use UI, crash, restart as keywords, and only read posts after Feb.9, I can not find anything useful.
If I found a post like this one, it will save me a lot of time. That is why I post it here.

Anyway, thanks for replying to me. I learn that the "Bugs" forum is more helpful than here, and logcat is a useful tool. :)

OrangeFox recovery is just reskined TWRP.
So same thing under the hood.
Yes, generally speaking, as you said it's a reskined TWRP.
But I guess for some devices, OrangeFox updates in time.
As I remember, there was a TWRP version not working for my K30 5g, then I moved to Fox Rec., it worked.
You know when people don't know the answer, they will try every possible solutions, who knows which one works :)
