You need to convert Google Messages to a system app, it's the only fix for the time being.

It's some sort of a permissions error, either need to wait for Mi team or xiaomi.eu team to fix it, I'm not sure where the error is from. Temp workaround is to convert the google messages app to a system app if you have root.

You need to convert these app to system apps with magisk or just by moving the apks to the proper folder in /system, this will grant them the proper permissions. Not ideal, but it works.

I think it's an issue with the new permissions system in MIUI 12, if you have root convert the app to a system app and see if it works.

If you have root try converting it to a system app, I believe there's some permissions bug in MIUI 12 where it's blocking regular apps access to sim information.

I've come to realize my MMS issue just happened to perfectly mimic the one present on my Mi Max3, that one happened for some unknown reasons, the new one is clearly a general MIUI 12 error, its clear they were quite a bit too overzealous in their security and privacy improvements to the point...

It can be done with the systemizer magisk module, this should be the one https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-app-systemizer-t3477512, it will also show up in the regular magisk repo though as "App Systemizer (Terminal Emulator)".

I'm running in to this on the mi Max 3 as well, not sure when it started, sometime in the 8.11.x round of updates, volume does change in sound settings, so if for whatever reason you're not in a position to reboot your phone you can do that.
